What Are Stances in Karate?

Stances, or dachi in Japanese, are the foundation of every movement in karate. A strong stance provides balance, stability, and power, allowing techniques to be delivered with precision and effectiveness. Each stance is designed for a specific purpose—whether it’s for mobility, defense, or generating force—and is trained repeatedly to build muscle memory and proper body alignment.

In karate, good stances are essential for both offense and defense. Without a solid stance, even the best punch or block loses its impact. As students progress, they learn to transition smoothly between stances, improving their overall control, fluidity, and effectiveness in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring).
