What Are Kicks in Karate?

Kicks, or geri in Japanese, are powerful striking techniques delivered using the legs and feet. They are an important part of karate, combining strength, speed, balance, and flexibility. Kicks can target different areas of the opponent’s body and are used for both offense and defense, depending on the situation.

Karate includes a variety of kicks—ranging from basic front kicks to more advanced spinning or jumping techniques. Practicing kicks helps students build lower body strength, improve coordination, and develop precise control. As with all techniques in karate, kicks are taught with an emphasis on form, timing, and proper execution.
